Perkerson Tourney Series -- Next Event is Sunday 1/27/13

Postby jritger » Tue Oct 16, 2012 7:53 pm

Details are still being nailed down, so check back.

Perkerson has won a $46,500 grant that will be used to complete the course using professional contractors. The grant will pay for 2 sets of concrete pads, vandal-proof signage, trees, etc. In order to qualify for the grant, we need to fundraise about $8,000. Installation of concrete pads will begin this winter, hopefully by year end. As part of the fundraising, we're holding a 4-part series this winter, the last Sunday each month in Nov, Dec, Jan and February.

Divisions/Entry Fees:
TBD by event

Fundraising: Entry fees will include a $5/head donation to the course fund with the remainder of entry fees paid out 100%.

Workday Discount: We need (a lot of) help getting the course ready for these events. You qualify for a $5 discount (one discount per event) by attending a course workday. Workdays are typically Saturday mornings from 9am-12pm, but arrangements can be made if that doesn't fit your schedule.

Event formats:

Sunday January 27, 2013: Budget Singles
1 rounds of singles. 3 Divisions: Open ($20), Am ($15) and Rec ($5). Price includes donation & side action. Starts at 1pm.

Sunday February 24, 2012: PDGA Icebowl
2 rounds, PDGA singles. Charity format with 75% to course fund and 25% to Sullivan Center.

Another update, we just found out that we've been AWARDED the grant. Now we really need to raise the matching funds to access it. Depending on how fast the funding moves, there is a good chance some of these events will be played on concrete pads.

As noted in the top post, you can get a $5 discount per event by attending a course workday. We will be out this Saturday morning working on short teepad construction.

Update ... Disccaddie will be handling payouts for all of these events. Note that in a twist from past action at Perkerson, all amateur divisions will be paid out in plastic -- this helps feed the donation. If you don't like that, we'll welcome you with open arms in the Open division.

We're working on a pre-registration incentive that is TBD, more on that very soon.

There are two workdays prior to the event to qualify for $5 entry fee discount -- this Saturday 11/17 and Saturday 11/24. Workdays 9am-12pm both days, bring cutting and digging tools as we'll be focused on clearing brush and getting the short teepads ready for play.

If you haven't been out to the course in a while, it's looking MUCH better after some course maintenance the last two weekends. It will be looking GREAT by the time of the first event and better with each following event. I had mentioned design changes coming to holes 1-3 ... these have been scaled back and hole 1 & 2 will remain as is, hole 3 will be made slightly longer with the teepad playing about where it is right now. Hole 9 is almost ready to convert to par 4. When completed the course will be par 60; it plays par 59 right now until we can move #9.

Disc Caddie will be offering a Perkerson fundraiser "deal" each tournament!

At registration you'll have access to a specific mold or plastic at a great price!

Tournament #1 will give you the opportunities to purchase Blizzard plastic at $10. One disc per person at this price. We want to get as many people involved with nearly $50,000 on the line for this disc golf course!

More info about this coming Sunday's event:

Registration: 8:00 - 9:15
Players Meeting: 9:15
1st Round Teeoff: 9:30
Lunch -- you are on your own. Plenty of food within 1-2 miles, especially if you like fried chicken.

CTPs/Side Action: Lots of it. Bring extra cash.

We have a tap for water adjacent to the pavillion (tourney central) and we have new bathrooms by the upper parking lot.

The course is looking AWESOME.

I've got the "special prizes" referenced in first post figured out. These will be awarded based on the winners of the overall points series. Not sure yet if it will be first place only or 1st-3rd places. We have an artist/sculptor who plays at Perkerson who will be making sculpture/trophies for the winners -- the theme is trash art made from materials found in the park; if you've spent any time playing out here you know he has some interesting stuff to work with. They should be very cool.

Thanks to everyone who came out on Sunday to check out the new course. We had awesome weather but low attendance, probably due to the timing ... 19 people.

$200 was raised for the course fund, which puts us at about $500 raised towards the $8,000 needed to complete the course installation. Our fundraiser discs just arrived: full color flat top rocs for $15 each / 2 for $25 .... pics and details coming in another thread. Buy them and support the course.

Detailed scores to come later, but here are the highlights: Matt Eatmon shredded the layout with 51 & 51 to win advanced by 10 strokes; beating first place in the (tiny) open division by 7 strokes. Ryan Adams won Open with a 59 & 50. Tom Garner & Andrew Fish tied for 1st in Intermediate with 64 & 54. And Cory Pennington took Rec with a 68 & 55. Jamey Tinch took the ace fund with an ace during the throwoff.

Next event is December 30th. Format is likely to change after the low turnout to simplify things a bit, especially since it's on another holiday weekend; either 2 rounds of singles or maybe just one round of singles. But there will definitely be an event on the 30th.

Notes about Divisions
1 - Fees shown are for events 1-3; the PDGA event will have a flat entry fee
2 - All amateur divisions paid in plastic
3 - These entry fees include a $5 donation to the course fund; remainder will be paid out close to 100%.
4 - Does not include optional $5 in CTPs/Ace Fund
5 - Rec will play short tees always. Int, Adv & Open will play long tees always.

John, if it does happen to remain doubles for this month's event (which I hope it does) do we need to plan on doubling the above entry fee you listed for the team's buy-in? I'm pretty sure that's the idea but I just wanted to be clear.

I'm going to rework the format. Last month was too much effort for a small turnout. Knowing that the next event is middle of winter break and the day before NYE, I'm expecting another low turnout.

I'll figure it out and post in the next few days. I'm leaning towards one round of singles with cash payouts for all divisions.

I will be keeping the skins format for the January event, because I want to play skins.

Revised format to simplify the December 30th event:

One round of singles, with plenty of side action, and cash payouts for all divisions. This is a fundraiser and everyone playing will pay a $5 course donation that is included with entry fee. We'll also have full color rocs for sale for $15 ea or 2 for $25. Additional donations will be willingly accepted.

Signin: 10am - 1045am
Teeoff: 11am
Rec plays short tees; other divs play long tees

Entry Fees:
Rec = $5 (donation only)
Int = $10 ($5 donation + $5 game)
Adv = $20 ($5 donation + $15 game)
Open = $30 ($5 donation + $25 game)

Optional Side Action:
$10 = 7 CTPs + $3 ace fund. Throw-off same as last time if no winner.

Bump, this is coming up in two weeks. Note the revised format, we're keeping it simple.

Construction is now looking like mid-January at the earliest as we have been given a few speed bumps by the city. We will know more about timing after 1st week in January.

Thanks everyone who came out and everyone that bought discs. We've already sold about 30% of the plastic so if you want one, let me know.

27 people came out. I can't find the score cards. I do remember that Dylan from Augusta shot hot round of 51 to win open and Andrew Fish crushed advanced with a 55. We raised about $250 between disc sale proceeds and entry fees.

The next action will be the last sunday in January, 1/28. In keeping with the simplified them, since I'm too tied up with other Perkerson construction things, we're going to run another single round of action.

Details:
Start time: 1pm; sign up open 12:30pm
Format: 1 round of singles; 3 divisions, cash payout
Divisions:
Open $20 (includes $5 donation, $1 ace fund and 4 $1 CTPs)
Am $15 (includes $5 donation, $1 ace fund and 4 $1 CTPs)
Rec $5 donation
We'll start at 1pm in case it's cold. Single
