Joe Rotan of Twisted Flyer is coming to Atlanta, and Twisted Flyer will be presenting an ICON in Atlanta Disc Golf Events, HOTLANTA

July 7-8 PDGA B-Tier

Prospect location is JP Mosely in Stockbridge, like in years past.

With the Worlds in Charlotte in mid-July it has opened the door for Joe to bring his Twisted Flyer brand to us. Joe and Twisted Flyer have been a leader in running tournaments for many years and will be sure to bring another great event to keep in the tradition of past great HOTLANTA events.

I would suggest signing up early to keep from getting shut out.

That's awesome. I was at the AM Worlds in Tulsa that you and Joe and the Twisted Flyer crew put on and it was a fantastic event. Still rocking the Twisted Tornado on the ol' Dodge pick-up today.

Rec Tees, There aren't any rec tees on this course outside of a few holes, in the past the rec tees get marked on the grass with flags, which will be the case here also...

As far as layout, Joe is telling me that he has asked for it to be in the toughest layout...

Edit:

There are rec tees on most holes, I talked with a couple of people who literally have never seen them but Daniel May insures me that they are there. So as far as I know at this point rec will play from the red tees...

Oh yeah, that was a little Hotlanta at Flyboy! A little camping, glow golf, hangover, on the 27 hole beast. Complete with the runway hole before it was discontinued. Memory is fuzzy, but Hotlanta did happen in 2010..

As a disc retailer it makes sense for them - as a player it sucks - especially on a par 61 3&1/2 hour minimum round time course. :shock:

All baskets are in their correct positions...

OPEN/ADV/INT. men will be playing all gold tees with the exception of black #13. This layout currently has all the tee signs on it, so it should be the easiest to follow.

Int. Women/REC/Novice/Juniors will be playing the blue tees. The blue tees are different from the gold tees on holes #1, #4, #5, #7, #8, #9, #10, #11, #12, #13, #17 and #18. With current registrations there are enough rated players to propagate round ratings on this layout.

OB/Mandos/Drop Zones/Course particulars:
-All asphalt (including paths) are OB. Exceptions are the tee off areas on # 9, #11, and #13. You must be completely surrounded by asphalt to be OB.
-Hole #1: Over the path on the right is OB. To the left of the roped off area (fairway) on #1 is OB .
- The frog ponds marked by rocks on #8 and #9 are OB. If you are touching any portion of the border rocks (whether on the inside or outside of the pond) you are not OB.
- Over the path behind the basket on # 8 is OB (#9’s fairway).
-Hole # 9: Over the path behind the basket is OB (10’s fairway). Going over the silt fence is NOT playing OB. Missed Mando: proceed to drop zone to the right of Mando (1 stroke penalty for missing mando).
-Hole #10: Missed Mando on gold tee: automatic re-tee + 1 stroke penalty. Over the path to the right of 10’s fairway is OB.
-Hole #11, Skull Island: Island shot. Discs that do not land on the island are OB. Either re-tee or proceed to drop zone (red tee)-1 stroke penalty for every missed attempt. The island is marked by rocks: IF YOUR SHOT IS TOUCHING ANY PORTION OF THE BORDER ROCKS YOU ARE IN BOUNDS!
-Hole #12: over the path to the right or behind the basket is OB.
-Hole #13: over the fence to the right of the fairway is OB. Creek and beyond behind basket is OB (marked by rope). Over the path by #13’s basket is OB (8’s fairway). Hole #12’s fairway is NOT ob.
-Hole #18: Over the fence in the football fields is OB. To the left of the roped area of the fairway is OB. The field of dreams is NOT playing OB

Final 9 Layout: #1, #2, # 3, #6, #8, #14, #15, #17, #18.

Hey everyone, great event, thanks to everyone who helped make this years event a success!

Special thanks to Daniel May for doing all of the hard work of setting up the course and setting the water out and everything else he did! Also a special thanks to Keith Johnson for helping out with the tournament director duties on Saturday also!

Joe is on the road, but he promised that he would have the last round scores submitted this evening when he gets to the hotel.

Daniel May, Joe needs the distances so he can get everything corrected for the ratings, points, par, etc...

Big Kudos to Daniel May, I hope they gave you a cut of the money!
and also big props to Dave and DiscStalker for the awesome trophy discs and their extensive help in communicating with the players leading up to the tournament!

Just my opinion...
Leave the third-party people out of the tournaments from now on...
Atlanta obviously doesn't need them with the awesome dedicated group of players and TDs in the area.
Unless they bring something to the table...Lets keep it local!

This tournament was a success ONLY because of the Locals!

I'm sure Joe Rotan did his part with sign up, players list, and whatever else he could handle remotely. Who knows? I f he hadn't stepped up there may not have been a Hotlanta. But the driving 1500 miles just to run an Atlanta event is wrong. I'm sure part of the decision had to do with Atlanta somewhere between Oklahoma and Charlotte (the Worlds) that was mentioned in the first post. Either way, wish I could have made it and thanks for those who made it happen.

Well, Bill...
All I saw... was the locals working their ass off... and the Twisted Flyer folks needing help at every step.

If it wasn't for discstalker and Fetta... no one would have known when the players meeting was...for a tournament "Presented" by Twisted flyer...they didn't do a whole lot to promote it...I remember seeing posts on DiscStalkers FB page every week leading up to it.

If it wasn't for Daniel May, the course would have been a disaster, no water on any holes... no tents... (what did twisted flyer provide in this respect?).

I'm not saying they were a hinderance... not at all... they did get the scores posted in a timely manner, and the cards organized during the tournament (wait that was Keith)

Opening the tournament to 90 players and having 5 somes... was a GREAT contribution...(that's sarcasm by the way)... Nothing like playing 4 hour rounds in 100º heat... I know it's called "Hotlanta"...but they just wanted to pull in more money. And again... without Daniel putting water out on the holes...half of the field would have dropped dead... considering some of us had to walk nearly 7 miles on Saturday (starting on hole 12).

and then!... because Twisted flyer needed to hit the road... they decided to have the players meeting at 8am on Sunday! Had I known that (a little schedule awareness ahead of time) I would have booked a room in Stockbridge rather than making the hour drive on Sunday.
And regardless of what they say... it wasn't because it would have been cooler... they wanted to leave as soon as possible.

They didn't even handle pay out!!!!
I got my voucher from Skeet (who is on the "team") but I doubt is actually paid by them to be there...and Dave (DiscStalker) marked my name off the list and took the voucher from my hand when I got my swag.

It was clear to me... that the Twisted Flyer group really didn't care about the tournament...it was the Locals that cared.

And all I was saying to begin with... is WE DONT NEED THEM. Having them there didn't "Grow the Sport"...and I could give two shits about how far someone drives... and I agree with Grease that we just "happened" to be on the way to charlotte for them. Bottom line is... they came, they put their banner up, they did their thing, and left (as soon as they could).

It didn't hurt having them here...but take them out of the equation, the tournament would have been just as good...and the money would have stayed local.

(BTW, I know how these boards work, and I realize I'll be the only one taking this stance publicly... which is fine... but know that everyone I talked to during the tournament felt similarly)

Although I was not there for the payout, I saw the rest of the tournament go down. I thought everything ran as it should. The locals stepped up as they do at every tourney helping the TD, whomever it may be. Thanks alot for that! I sure used the water/shade tents as a caddy and I know the players appreciated it. 90 players happens in almost every tournament where the dg scene can support it. Travel 3-4 hours north on 85 and you will see it. Or go to texas, cali, oregon, arizona,.... you get the picture. Expect earlier start times for the second day of tournaments thats the norm, welcome to PDGA tournies buddy. And the only hitch we encountered was reading mis-information on this thread about player meeting start times and we can thank a local for that.

On a side note: Joe and crew are among a long list of TD's who have run Hotlanta. Of all the years of it's existence, Hotlanta has been run
more than once by only one TD. Other than that TD (sorry s.o.b.) each year it was run by someone different. Over the past few years it seemed
the torch would be dropped, but at the last minute brave souls stepped up and made it happen, thanks to people like Vach, Dollar, Daniel
May, Joe Rotan, etc.

The tournament is over and I would say it was a success. But in all honesty I would say that Rich isn't that far off in his statements. There were some hiccups along the way, but that happens at most events. Some TDs run events to make money, and that's ok bc it is a lot of work. But I agree in hoping that D May (and Wade), Discstalker, and the McCoys got a lil piece of the pie bc it couldn't have happened without them. When I saw Bill Thornton's name as Bob Thorton under hole sponsors I got pretty offended. I think it's best to have local TDs, BUT the more tournies the merrier.

The only reason I didn't lose a lot of money running Hotlanta last year was bc I won. I realized afterwards that if you put all that work in and lose a bunch of money in the process it makes you less likely to want to run another one.

90 players happens in almost every tournament where the dg scene can support it. Travel 3-4 hours north on 85 and you will see it. Or go to texas, cali, oregon, arizona,.... you get the picture. Expect earlier start times for the second day of tournaments thats the norm, welcome to PDGA tournies buddy.

I play plenty of tourneys... and not just locally either...
This was the first 5'some tourney I've ever been a part of... and I've played 18 PDGA sanctioned events over the past year...and probably another 10 un-sanctioned.

And earlier start times are fine...when you can plan for it...but that was a post 2nd round decision... and felt a whole lot like they just wanted to get the hell out of dodge.
We didn't know the time for the players meeting until Friday afternoon...

anyway... my point to all that was...
If we feel the need to bring in a third party...or rather... Allow...a third party group to come in and "put on" a tournament... they need to do more than Twisted Flyer did.
...If they weren't involved this past weekend, I don't think there would have been a noticeable difference...

I remember when 5 somes used to be the norm. It wasn't untill recently, like in the past 8 years that Ive seen the trend to 4. Heck, I've even played a tourney with 6 somes. Now that sucked, and I'm glad they've done away with it.

Overall, the tournament was a success. There were some minor communication and/or forward planning issues, and I think there's a least one scoring error on the PDGA site (not mine.)

Could it have been better/smoother? Yes.
Could it have been much worse? Hell yes.
Would I have...politely but firmly asserted myself... if Joe had made a bigger deal about me not being signed up when he started the players meeting after I specifically asked about check in time Thursday and the times didn't get updated until 8:30pm the night before the tournament? Well, thankfully it didn't come to that.

I think that local TD's have somewhat homogenized their routines. This probably isn't intentional or coordinated. More likely it's the natural result of playing each others tournaments, seeing what works for local players and what doesn't, and adopting what each thinks is best/suits their own processes. To be fair, I don't think Joe could have done much better without spending more time in advance of the tournament helping Daniel with the course. And, it may be a bit unfair to expect a guy from out of state to spend that kind of time away from home catering to our expectations. Even if he is just on his way to Worlds.

The division of labor was obvious. This is not a negative, just a fact. Thanks to Joe and crew for coordinating the tournament action, Daniel May for the crazy amount of work before and during the tournament (and kudos for taking 3rd while doing it,) Dave for all his efforts, and everyone else that pitched in/sponsored holes/just showed up to play.

It's in the books now. When do we start planning for next year?

The answer to that question is now. You start planning now for the tourney next year as it is still fresh in your mind. You make note of the things that worked and things that didn't and you look to improve.

I'll just say that there are a few misconceptions on this in this thread. I totally agree that there was a lack of communication going in and something I tried to minimize as best I could as we got closer to the tournament.

First thing, Joe was not on his way to worlds, he withdrew from worlds over a month ago due to back problems, he drove out here and back from Oklahoma for nothing other than running this tournament in this case.

2nd, we did not have the players meeting at 8:am in order for Joe to leave earlier, Keith, Joe and I discussed all that had to be done the next day and the overall schedule and decided it would have been after 6pm on Sunday after all was said and done and wanted to move that up as best we could, additionally we did discuss it being cooler for at least half the round on Sunday after the brutal heat on Saturday. Joe actually followed me up to the shop after it was all over and did not get out of town until after 7:pm.

3rd, all the payout was done through Joe, I did not do any of it and Skeet was just helping out the flow.

That happened because I came in the shop and I was informed that someone named Bob Thorton had called in and purchased two hole sponsorships and I posted it that way not even making any connection whatsoever, as a matter of fact everyone in the shop was going who is Bob Thorton and originally thought it was another person from Oklahoma that had purchased one. It wasn't until my wife actually pulled the order and started to get it into the pipeline for the tee-sign, discs and shirts that we saw who it was, but at that time I had already posted the incorrect name, copying and pasting it from place to place, my bad and I apologize for it.

All in all, I thought it all came together pretty well and liked the activities on Sunday for sure and would love to have Joe come back any time. Joe's a world Champion and one of Innova's top team players and its always a good thing to be able to hang out with people like that, and after his near death experience with Meningitis and Shingles a year ago at worlds, I for one enjoyed having him here and getting to know him better, he's certainly got some great stories to tell that's for sure...

I originally came here to post that someone left a camp time stool at the tourney, it has a Raising Chains sticker and VooDoo Disc Golf sticker, and Stand for Peace sticker.

I've got it and will hold it until it is claimed...

Mine has a faded "jonp" on the top corners of the seat, Innova and other stickers on the legs. baby come back...

I for one am very thankful for the efforts of Joe and Dave for helping put this tournament together. Yet another year in which Hotlanta would not have had occured execept for the very few who were willing to make it happen.

It is my hope that the Atlanta community become more supportive of those who promote disc golf. Running a tournament is a risky investment. Joe drove 3000 miles to help run this tournament and that should not be overlooked. Just the gas alone is a worthy investment. David at Diskstalker is another stand up individual who should also be congratulated. Who do you think provided most of the tents and water coolers that were on the course?

As for my efforts, I really do love JP Moseley park. It was my pleasure to help prep the course and distribute water and tents to the course. I helped contibute to the (in my belief) a successful Hotlanta tournament. That to me is its own reward: knowing I helped and that the players had a good time (I hope).

If you don't want outsiders running tournaments here then this is your wake up call. Run a tournament and make it better. Better yet run this tournament next year and make it the best one yet. No one is stopping you but yourself.

As long as the TD report was sent in, all will be well. The ratings update overwrites existing score uploads.

The official Ratings are definitely wack. A 59 from the Rec Tees was rated 22 points higher than a 59 from the Long Tees.

It looks like everyone who shot from the shorter layout averaged like 100 points above their ratings

Yep. Andrew Sweeton has been notified and says he'll take care of it when he gets back from the Vibram Open. Joe Rotan confirmed that he had the correct info on the TD report, but it apparently got missed or mangled during data entry.

Joe did find an error in the submissions that intermediate women were included in the long layout. However I don't think that a revision is going to resolve the issue, it looks to me that including the womens intermediate only gets to 4 ratings propagators for that layout which is not enough. As it is, there were only three ratings propagators in the original inclusion that I see.

It looks like the long layout is getting an SSA of 56 and the shorter layout is getting an SSA of 58. The best round among the propagators was a 64. Using the PDGA's rough estimate of length/285 + 30 comes in at a SSA rating of 52 for the blue tee layout which seems much closer to accurate than the 58 it's getting now...

I think the real problem is that there were not enough propagators to properly establish the SSA rating for that layout at this event. Not sure if it'll change on the next update or if there is anything that can be done about it...
