Bad News at Mathews

I went to play a round at Mathews (yesterday) with a friend and they have started cutting down most (if not all) the pine trees around the lake. The baskets for holes 1,3,5,15,16, and 17 are gone. Not sure what the future holds for what was a fun course but it looks pretty sucky........

Went to try and play the course today. I knew they would be cutting down a few trees around the lake but didnt know they were also cutting down fifty percent of the trees. Especially in the woods on 6, 7, 12, 13, 14. This was my home course and I really enjoyed it with the trees. Without the trees the course will be too short and open. Dont know if the baskets are going back in but don't think I will play the course either way. Just glad Gwinnett County and Athens are not too far of a drive for me.

Tim Petrea gave an announcement about this during awards at the GCO. I was figuring out payout, so couldn't listen. Can anyone summarize what he said?

The baskets(belonging to the county) have been removed.

I talked to head of Walton parks and rec today.. He ensured that the baskets would be back up as soon as the trees were removed.

Well, the course is still not there, btw. The trees n stuff are still on the ground and they dont show signs of being removed anytime soon

Hopefully they will use the baskets at Criswell, which has a lot more land which is a lot more suitable for a course that could impress people. Mathews was ok...


BUT

I can't imagine having a tournament on it.

Does anyone know the parks people? What would it take to improve the 9 and add to them at Criswell?

Tim does not work for Walton Co anymore.
As far as expanding Criswell, that is not an option. The property line is very close to some of the holes now, (there is not that much property that is not set up for ball flds).

The City of Monroe actually owns Mathews Park, the Co was maintaining it. The City decided to harvest the timber for economic gain, and the County was not pleased (a little pi$$ing contest if you will).

Hopefully someone will come to their senses, redesign the course, and install it.

17 of 18 baskets are back up..F or the most part course is cleaned up with the exception of a few down trees in the woods. No tee signs up but if you have played before you will not have any problems knowing where to tee off from.

Played the course Sunday evening! Lilke Ryan said, #3 basket wasn't installed yet, some of the teepads were obliterated, and there are still limbs and debris in areas.
Glad to see that they didn't completely cut down all the trees, it opened up some of the holes (like #5).
