Tournament Central for GSSS #1 will be the MAIN Building near the practice basket - the same location as for the 3rd Sunday Monthly Doubles.

2 rounds with a field of 54 in 3somes will be played at the North Georgia Canopy Tours Disc Golf course - GA's only private open every day year round Disc Golf Course
featuring a PAR of 61 with dual tees and multiple pin positions.

The players packs for the Event (which ALL players will get for this 1st Event) have arrived and I think everyone will be happy with it.

Anyone who plays in the 1st Event who stays overnight or returns the next day to play the monthly 3rd Sunday doubles on the 18th at 2pm will play for only $5* with the payout still based on a $15 entry and a GUARANTEED $100 PER PLAYER to be paid to the winning team if there are at least 15 teams entered.

*all non-Event players will pay the usual $15 doubles Entry fee.

Rustic Camping and TeePee "glamping" with Heat or A/C and electric are available by reservations - Please tell them you are playing in the Event when you book as someone will also receive 1 night of their stay paid for by me at a drawing to be held at the awards ceremony. I will choose from the names given to me by the NGCT staff, so make sure to let them know to have a chance to win!

There is also a bath house with separate mens and ladies facilities for use by the campers and TeePee inhabitants as well as the option to order breakfast to be delivered to the Command Center each morning that you can order when you check in.

Some of the exciting news for the 5th and Final year will include that EACH Event will have raffles, 50/50 and CTP throwoffs with valuable prizes such as CASH, 50 dollar vouchers, and a BASKET to be given away at ALL 6 Events plus the one that somone who has the winning raffle ticket with the 1 in 30 chance will win not only the Sportcatcher basket, but also a bag and a set of discs to go with it this year.

Open Pro Field is starting to shape up with 3 1000 rated Golfers and 3 950ish rated Golfers.
4 PRO Masters all within 12 ratings points and 7 Older AM guys with all but 1 player within 20 points of each other.
Could be some pretty exciting races on that course with only 2 rounds to separate from your opponents.

I'll add an extra $100 to 1st and 50 to second place if we hit 12 Open pros over the payouts for the 1st Zip Line Open held Oct 15-16th, 2011 only 5 short months before this Event!
Maybe some of those 9 ADV AM guys want to play Open and test the waters on a course that requries all the shots in your bag and SMART decision making skills - they can as they could still accept merch instead of Cash if they choose to maintain thier AM status - and everyone is playing the same course.

Some interesting stats for this Event.

There are only 7 players of the 29 who played in OCT signed up for this years Event.

There is 1 NEW PRO Woman - will be 1st titlist.
There are 7 NEW open Pros (Vach and Ellis return) - and no defending Champ.
There are 5 NEW Pro Masters (only Keith returns to defend his title)
There are 9 NEW Adv Masters (only Fred returns to defend his title)
There are 10 NEW ADV (Wes and Torbit return) - and no defending Champ.
There are 6 NEW INT players - No returning INT players.
There are 9 NEW REC players (only Gabe returns to defend his title)
We will be crowning at least 4 new champions on MARCH 17th.

The course has 3 pin placements that were not installed for the OCT Event that are being used for GSSS#1 (holes 7, 9, and 13) - so the 49 Dollar posted on the SUN OCT 16th layout and the 51 Vach posted on the SAT OCT 15th layout will stand as course records for those layouts - and whoever who shoots the best score at Event #1 will hold the course record for the configuration the course is in now.

The course is looking good and the fairways will be groomed for the Event along with mulch added to almost every hole in front of the tees and wherever else it is needed - and the staff is EXTREMELY excited about hosting everyone and showing off their gem in the mountains.

Keith, Since we are playing in 3'somes how would you advise we split up in case somebody has to drop out? One player forward and maybe one backward? Thoughts? I haven't run in to this in the past but you never know.

I'll have the cards set when everyone checks in SAT morning - if need be, I'll have a 4 some or 2 of REC or PROS - depending on where needed.

For the 2nd round it will be the same - but if when start time comes for the 2nd round and someone dropped I'm not aware of - then yes - 1 forward, 1 back, and the person who didn't let me know they were dropping will be dropped for good going forward.

Keith - I was thinking more along the lines of an injured player during the round.

For example - let's say I am chilling on a bench admiring my Ace that I just threw and a southen hairy nosed rabid wombat attacks my pinky finger. A bite from a southen hairy nosed rabid wombat can be very painful and scratches from its claws could create a serious "owie". You know as well as I do that a pinky finger injury, especially one from a southen hairy nosed rabid wombat, can take down even the toughest of disc golfers.

I am raising funds and collecting discs for Eagle's Wings' next trip to Mexico this summer! I need discs, I need cash! whichever you can lend, either is great, and your contribution to Mexico and the disc golf community is most impactful and appreciated!

Please bring your used discs you don't throw (new ones are great too!), small bags, draw string bags, disc golf stuff, extra cash, etc and donate it to an amazing organization. Be a part of the foundation of disc golf in Mexico, and promote volunteerism in our disc golf community.

My apologies to the guys I played in the 1st round as they had to endure my "whiney baby playing in the rain" syndrome that I suffered from

Highlights from the Event at North Georgia Canopy Tours GSSS Event #1

Ramon Escamilla aced hole 3, but wasn't in on the Ace fund allowing Bob Braun to ace the ace fund throw off for first place winning $40 with Courtney 2nd closest getting $20 and myself 3rd closest getting $12.

It rained during the first half of the 1st round making the course a tad slick in spots (14 to 15 slip and slide track was rerouted by me on SUN to a Lightning McQueen serpentine, serpentine, serpentine walkway to eliminate the straight downhill track) the decks on 5 and 16 were dicey if you tried to do a full runup or didn't put down a towel - but were outstandingly grippy during the 2nd round after drying in the sun for a couple of hours or so after the rain stopped.

Courtney had to put up with me for 2 rounds and it showed in her "lower than her ratings" scores - but she did LOVE the course.
Tim Ellis shot a course record (on that layout) 52 during the rainy first round and "only" a 55 during the bone dry 2nd round to lead wire to wire and win $400 in Open Men.
Bob Braun comes back to win Pro Masters.
Hugh Torbit Beats Jordan Lane in a playoff to win ADV.
Darren Schatz wins ADV Masters
Ben Neal wins INT
Dale Hatcher beats Richard (I can't believe I won but lost by not adding correctly in the 1st round ) Petty in a playoff in REC.

Scott Vaughan won the closest to the pin throwoff - winning an $89 3 hour Adventure Zipline Tour in addition to other goodies valued over 30 bucks for his $5 for 6 throws.

Brad Traylor won the "we're giving a basket away at EVERY EVENT" basket raffle for his $5 for 8 tickets.

Sun Dubs saw 4 players from the Event play - with Ryan Adams as an odd dog winning by 1 stroke over 4 other teams tied for 2nd and pocketing the entire $70 1st place money.

Thanks to all 54 players who created a full field and the largest 1 day amount of Disc Golfers for the 11 months the course has been open.

Any response from the owners or staff about the turn out for the tourney?

Leah was there and spoke at the players meeeting and talked to players at lunch and after the second round - they were very impressed and thankful for everyone to be there and hoped that the players would review the course and facilities at exploregeorgia.ORG as well as review the course at discgolfcoursereview.com

She also took the feedback about the slick wooden decks when it rains and Wes told her about rhinoliner application possibilites to try to see if it would work on wood or if there is something on the market that might - so they are taking players concerns to heart. I also did the trail work on SUN in response to how slick the path was as it has really gotten worn in with all the recent play with the warmer winter.
The course holds up extremely well as within a couple hours of rain stopping most of the course looks likes it hasn't rained at all.
There is a drainage issue on the area behind 5's short (concrete tee) as with the pad arera built up the water ponds behind and in front of the pad - this will be taken care of in the near future with a channel to let the water drain to the river near the teepad.

Also as more mulch becomes available it will be spread around the course on the needed areas to help mitigate erosion and give a "cleaner" look to the non grassy areas on the course.
Hopefully by the 3rd annual Zip Line Open in 2013 when the course is over 1 year old (it is just 3 weeks short of 1 year today) the word of mouth and the "must not miss playing here" that the players have been spreading around the area will allow the Event to be even bigger and better.

I still suggest using strips of grip tape, the stuff that goes on top of skateboards. Or possible throwing some sand or abbrasive in some paint and painting them. Maybe it would add grip, not sure if it will stil be slick in the rain though

Anti-skid additives to paint will work fine as long as a quality paint (epoxy) is used in conjunction with a quality primer (oil based epoxy primer). The decking would need to be pressure washed & dried out for anything to have a chance of adhering. I've done it for many jobs, Lockheed Martin AFB was one. Sherwin Williams has a good product line in their commercial division.
