Redan Handicap Match Play Tournament-Sunday 12/19

I will be running a Handicap Match Play Tournament next Sunday 12/19 at Redan. The course will be set up in mostly short or medium pins. This is an unsactioned tournament trying a new format inspired by The Players cup and USDGC 2011.
This is how it's going to work.

-Each round will be an 18 hole match.

-The lower rated player in each match will get a 1 hole advantage for every 15 ratings points below his/her higher rated opponent. So if Vach(rated 995) plays Gaddis(rated 915) then Gaddis would start the match 5 up. ***Maximum number of Holes awarded before the start of the round is 10. Players can't start more than 10 up.***

-The match would go on until one player cannot win with the remaining number of holes, or until 18 holes are completed.

-We will be playing in groups of 2 for maximum speed of play.

-DOUBLE ELIMINATION Bracket-(you can still cash if you lose a match)

We were just informed us that the bag tag final is at Redan on Saturday, we will still be having this event on Sunday since we already have enough for an 8 man bracket. Anyone else that still wants to play some Sunday match play let me know and we will continue trying to make a 16 man bracket(or bigger.)

From what I see, you're almost a 1000 rated player with most rounds at a consistent 999 with a couple crappy 960 rated rounds thrown in. Nice shooting!

When would you need to know if we want in?

My rating (in my opinion) does not really reflect my play, The problem I have is I usually have 1 or 2 holes that kill me.

This might be fun to play with my lowly 933 rating.


vs Dollar = 4.46 up - Even if Dollar wins every hole I would get to play till hole #12. Now if I can just tie on 6 holes I would win!!

Not Dollar, but the way Match play worked in San Diego for almost 30 years now and the Players Cup this year is tied holes - no one gets points, old numbers - players get bye's to next round - don't know how Dollar would seed them for sure but since he mentions ratings I would assume that's how he'll seed players.
Match play is usually quicker as you are not playing through completely if you have no chance to win the hole, players allows gimme's and1f you are down a certain number of holes with less remaining the match is over. If he uses winner and loser brackets and front 9 / back 9 of course then it wouldn't be long before people were finished for the day.

I wish I was able to play, but I'll be in the mountains, looking at some property.

I'm sure Dollar has played enough match play Events in SC, GA and FL to know how to handle it all.

Since he doesn't mention payout, I'm guessing he's going to keep it all for his troubles.

Keith already covered most of it, but this is how it goes...

1.No points awarded for holes tied.

2.We discussed the seeding issue and originally we were going to seed it on rating. BUT since we are handicapping, every match should be close to equal so we will be doing it with a random draw.

3.I'm going to pay out 6 spots if we have between 16-32 players. If we have 16 players it will be something like this... 1-$110 2-$80 3-$60 4-$40 5/6-$15

Now, about the brackets, # of holes, and # of matches.
The bracket you posted is not exactly what we will be using. The most you could play would be 6 matches in a 16 man bracket. It is double elimination, but once you have a loss, the best you can do is third because you move to the consolation(losers) bracket. 2nd loss and you're out unless you lose in the Consolation bracket Semifinals, you tie for 5/6th. The winner of the Conso bracket gets third.
If we have more than 16 players then we might play 18 holes the first round and then cut the number of holes to 9 or 10 for the rest. Also, if there is not a perfect number (8,16,32) of players then there will be some byes in the first round and the first round of the Conso bracket.

1. Cut it in half. If you were getting 4 holes, then you only get 2.
2. The bracket you posted would work, but match 27 would be for 1st/2nd. And match 28 would be for 3rd/4th. The losers of match 25 and 26 would get 5th/6th.

tough question. When we were originally planning we discussed this but never came to a conclusion. If you don't have a rating for this event, you are probably gonna get saddled somewhere between 925-950.

Or list every tournament you played in the last 2 years (or your last 10-15 rated rounds) and we'll make one.

Actually I texted Craig Right when I left so I did try to let someone know that I left. I wasn’t going to go and interrupt tournament play walking all over the course getting in everyone’s way looking for Matt to let him know I was leaving and expected him to be decent about the situation (he still may) and at least figure out what was going on before handing out my money.

I got up early and drove an hour so I could make the 10AM sharp tee time only to find out at 11 that I was still going to be waiting another hour before getting to play with the potential of having to wait another 2 hours after my first match before playing a second. I didn’t sign up to waste all that time waiting to play and if I had known that at the time of sign up I would of gone ahead and left. That option wasn’t given to me so I left when I got tired of waiting and as I said I wasn’t going to interrupt play or make a big deal about it and asked Craig in the text I sent to get my money back but he didn’t get the text until later.

I know because I played Gaddis in the semis (he got a 2nd round bye after waiting around for you) and after our match we went to Lunch, all before 1. You F'd up the bracket worse than it already was by leaving making it 6 on one side and 4 on the other.

I'm not mad at ya, but asking for your money back is falling on deaf ears.(btw- I had to play an extra match in the conso bracket bc you left, and even though 2-2 should have gotten me cash based on the bracket, I left empty handed .) So, no, I'm not gonna come off another 20 for Dr.Impatient.

If I hadnt of left everyone would have had to keep waiting because the same problem of un-even brackets would have been there. My leaving is what made things go faster. I dont know how I could have played 2 matches by 1Pm when the first one wasnt going to start until 12. 18 in holes in 30 minutes? If people were wondering where I was Craig has my # and I could have been called and no one would have had to wait on me but no one asked if anyone had my number or anything obviously. As far as being mad why would you be mad? Im the one who showed up for some action that was supposed to unfold one way then after cash is collected turns out is is going to go another and you are saying you are keeping my money. Thanks for not being mad for taking money from me for action I didnt play in.

It isn't largely, more just an observation. Let's not get too sensitive here. Patrick is my friend and I hate to see things didn't go well for him. Everyone involved here are adults and this can and should be worked out where no one's feelings are hurt going forward. The message board is probably not the best place for that to happen as it allows those not involved, like myself, to become involved. It looks like both Patrick and Matt could have done things differently to avoid this and I hope they work it out as they are both nice guys.

All of my matches lasted less than an hour, and you bailed so you have no idea what kind of time frame the tourny consisted of. But anyway, the fact is that you left, and by doing so you forfeit your matches and buy in. I'm done with this thread.
