Incidentally, a couple of people have asked about transportation for people other than Juniors between rounds.
I plan to have transportation between parks available for those that need it at lunch time and also after the second round. We could even run someone between parks before the player's meeting if required.

Please let me know your situation in advance by PM or E-mail so i can plan for it. I don't want anyone to be left out because they feel they can't get between the parks.

We know of people from NC planning on coming down and I have gotten ahold of the SC gang and some AL women as well...bright side is (for those of you who don't care ie 99%) that they will probably bring their boyfriends/husbands/brothers etc... so for every woman you are likely adding another guy too.

Is the players list pretty up to date? My gf is thinking of playing but she isn't very comfortable playing a tourny with only 1 womans division. Although Bill, she has just about doubled her distance since her clinic with Courtney. She has been flipping over that leopard like crazy. Hit a few birdies at the Herm from reds.

As Bill pointed out, I had the parks reversed here, though it was right elsewhere. I am very sorry and have corrected it in the top post.The grouping was all correct, I just reversed the parks somehow with sloppy cut/paste procedures.

As for between park rides, I can help if people need rides between rounds. It will likely be easy to catch a ride with someone, but if you are worried about it, let me know via E-Mail or PM and I'll make sure to get it arranged for you. (td@gwinnettcountyopen.com is best).

As for layout, It's pretty close to what it was last year. I'll have hole descriptions to post later, but basically this:
Lenora:
Rec and jrs short 2 to regular 2 basket. Jrs 12 and under will have short tees on holes 6-8.
Int and above will play long 2 to Alt 2 basket.

The alex:
Rec an Jrs play from the reds. Jrs 12 and under will have short tees on holes 16-18
Int and above play from the blues

I've never been able to completely wrap what passes for my brain around the whole ratings process, but from what I think I do understand, it looks like there would be only one propagator (me) for the Rec Men and Juniors (13 and over) and none for the younger kids, so there'd be no round ratings generated for those groups (assuming we don't get an influx of 800+ rated Rec Men) -- is my understanding correct on that?

There are a lot of newer players out at The Alex. I've been handing out flyers there and at Lenora, so I'm not terribly surprised to see a bunch of non-PDGA players. Several have indicated this is their first tournament.

It goes to show that if you put in a new Disc Golf course, you'll get new Disc Golfers.

Play in a division that plays the course you want to play. No one says you have to start in Rec.

This is why I don't understand the Rec division. It seems at almost every tourney the TD has a layout for Rec (and sometime Int) that is easier than the regular course. Do rec players usually go out for casual rounds and create shorter holes to play at every course? Back before I played tourneys I used to love playing new courses, but never have I been to a course and then made up shorter tees, because then I wouldn't have really played the course. Plus, you never get to see how you stack up against everyone else that is playing the real course.

Speak for yourself -- I usually do play the reds at Alex, and am in every meaningful sense a Rec-level player (except perhaps for how long I've been playing without getting much better). Selfishly, I'd prefer to keep us on the reds simply because it might give me a chance to actually win a tournament for once in my life -- I'm competitive on shorter courses, but the greater the overall distance the worse I perform relative to the rest of the field, even in Rec. With this lingering knee pain I've had since the Forsyth County Open, I'm not even throwing as far as I usually do, but on a shorter layout I can still hang with a Rec field (ala Lost In The Woods, where I shot myself in the foot with a 7 on hole 7 in the first round and a 5 on 14 in the second -- bogey the first of those, and par the second one, and I'd have won by a stroke).

From a slightly more altruistic standpoint (though still somewhat selfish, since my son's one of those affected), moving Recs to the blue tees guarantees that no junior players will have rated rounds, since they will not be playing the same layout at the same time as any of the propagators in the field (may not happen anyway, unless we get some more 800+ rated players in Rec). On the other hand, it would mean that all of the Rec players would get rated, since they'd be playing the same layout at the same time as Int.

If you're playing from the long tees all the time, you are not a rec player.
Rec, Juniors and Amatuer Ladies divisions are the only ones whose tees should be shortened. Not for reasons of scoring but for the amount of time it takes to complete a round.

I was speaking for myself and several rec players I spoke to. I could see 3, 17, 18 and 7 from the shorts...all other holes would be mad short. I guess I'll just play intermediate.....

This is why I don't understand the Rec division. It seems at almost every tourney the TD has a layout for Rec (and sometime Int) that is easier than the regular course.

Your experience is greater than mine, of course, but I've played Rec in practically every event I've played, and I can only think of a couple of instances where the TD created a special layout for Rec: (1) the ADGO event last fall at Flyboy, where Kelly shortened some of the longer holes, and (2) the Perkerson Ice Bowl this year -- hard to call whether a set of shorter tees is a "special" layout or not in this case, but we'll count it for current purposes (and I should note that the Open and Advanced divisions also played the shorter layout in the second round). Otherwise, to the best of my recollection, the Rec groups I've been part of have all played one of the standard sets of tees for the course, and in several have played the same layout as the Open division. But being elderly, my memory is no doubt somewhat faulty, and no doubt my other mental faculties also. By "a layout for Rec that is easier than the regular course", did you intend that to include, say the red or blue tees at ERP, or shorter but standard, permanent tees at other courses? If so, I concede your point. But in that case, at least some of the other divisions are typically playing at least one round from one of the shorter sets of tees also, so it's much weaker point.

And for the record, I'm not really a fan of playing a "modified" shorter layout during tournaments for any but younger juniors divisions. On a course with multiple pads, give me the shortest set, but don't shorten it beyond that.

As I understood Garrett's post, the Rec group will be playing the standard Red tees at Alex, and the same layout as everyone else at Lenora except for hole 2 -- personally, I'd be fine with having Rec play the longer version of 2 and having only the <12 juniors play the shorter version.

Not in my experience, no. Personally, I never have. But neither do we all feel compelled to go out and play from the longest possible tees on courses that provide multiple options. I know I can't throw 400' -- can't throw 300' except with a tailwind and a couple dozen feet of downhill elevation change -- so playing the longest possible layout just means it takes me longer to play without really adding anything to the challenge or test of skill (unless the longer layout genuinely requires a different approach or different types of shots, in which case I may well play it for variety at times).

1) Look at the bottom of the rec field at the AAA, those are the "real" REC players.
You should not be playing par rounds from the blues in REC.
A 56 from the blues last year at the GCO is a 939 rated round, welcome to ADV.
A 62 was an 878, nice REC round.

2) The red tees are NOT "womens" tees, they are REC tees and you guys should be encouraging those who throw 100' rainbow hyzers on every throw to be playing from them. I know, I know, it REALLY hurts your pride to play from the "girls" tees. Go out and throw a 50 or under from them in the all long pins and I promise I will never ask you to play them again.

3) Lenora had an SSA of 44 in the GCO using the long 2.
Alex has an SSA of 44 from the reds and 50 from the blues.

Soo...the Lenora argument is invalid.

Lastly, and most importantly...if you are too good for the reds, play INT or better.

Oh and to $$, these intrepid REC players are not only making up their own tees but they are apparently pouring concrete slabs for them...wiley bastards. I totally agree that making up tees on courses that do not have shorts is silly but this is not the case and is irrelevant to a lot of the courses in the area.

I have no problem with where people want to play, but complaining that your bagger\sub-bagger\ super-sub-bagger division is not playing the tees you normally play seems to me, ridiculous! Think about it, as long as I get 2 others people to agree with me, I can have a Cross-dressing Advanced Masters division!

The red tees at Alexander are red tees, not ladies' tees. They are for beginning players; so is (generally) the recreational division. Tee assignments are based on division, not sex. Pro Women play the same tees as Pro Men. The other divisions are equally equitable.

Last year at the Gwinnett County Open, Recreational men and women played from the red tees. This year will be the same.

It is quite common in tournaments for Rec to play from shorter tees. I believe this is a surprise to newer tournament players (and quite a few have signed up) so I should have perhaps made it known on the website and/or here in the thread. I've put it in my notes to do so next year.

There are reasons, of course, mainly having to do with speed of play and accurate ratings. These reasons are based on generalities and I know there are exceptions that could challenge either one in certain scenarios. The AAA is a non-sanctioned tournament, held at one park and has more daylight.

If anyone who signed up for Rec wants to move to Intermediate, you can do so on the day of the tournament by bringing the price difference (only $5) to the tournament and letting us know when you sign in.

To help people decide what scores will fit in what division, Here is a link to last year's scores. Everyone played Lenora first and the Alex second last year. Note that the intermediate scores ranged from 57 to 66.

This really is no different than golf which is is based on, from wikipedia on golf,

The first section of every hole consists of what is known as the teeing ground, or tee-box. There is usually more than one available box for a player to place their ball, each one a different distance from the hole. They are generally as level as feasible, and most are slightly raised from the surrounding fairway. The most common tee areas, in increasing order of length from the hole, are the ladies' tee, the men's tee, and the championship tee. Other common tee-boxes include the junior tee, closer to the hole than the ladies' tee, and the senior tee, generally between the ladies' tee and the men's tee. In tournaments, golfers generally tee off from the box one level further from the "normal" box for their class (men use the championship tee, ladies use the senior or men's tee, and juniors use the ladies' tee).

Shorter tees are to accommodate players with less natural power, in this case you have rec womens, mens and juniors all teeing off from the red tees, you would usually have women and juniors teeing off from shorter tees than mens in any tournament and class.

That doesn't mean that playing from them doesn't add in unknown challenge for any player as you will have to pick your discs and shots differently anyway and for noodle armed players like Frank, Al and Brian it'll give them a leg up for sure:>)

After reading some of this information I am not sure whether we should stay there or move to intermediate. We started playing about 4 months ago. I'd say on average we can drive around 250ft and only throw epic failures about once every 10 throws at this point. Last week I managed to get a +7 at Alexander park from the blue tees, though admittedly that was probably one of my better games.

Do you think we should stick to rec as this is our first tournament or should we bump up to intermediate and make everyone feel a bit better about themselves in that division? I appreciate the input and look forward to hearing many a "thwack" sound at Alexander park tomorrow.

You should ask yourself 1 question. What tees do I want to play? If you want to play the blues then step up to Int.. If you want to play the reds then stay where you are. This being your first tourney you have nothing to lose and you can always drop back to Rec if you feel outclassed in Int.

I'd say seven over from the blues is about right for Rec -- most people typically shoot a few strokes higher in tournaments, especially the first few , than in casual rounds. Last year, first place in Intermediate was even par, last place was 9 over (specifically on the round at Alex). Rec played from the red tees, so the scores aren't directly comparable, but only the first three players in Rec had round ratings that were higher than the low end of the Intermediate field.

I can't say enough to thank everyone involved in the GCO this year. Way out in front was Bill Belanger who not only acted as TD at Lenora, but also talked up the tournament in the local area and out of state. Several people signed up because of his efforts. I've heard he did a great job even with some rough timing issues and a couple of mistakes on my part.

Thanks also to Mike Curtis for helping me score the first round and carrying my unwieldy leader board between parks. Mike also helped with tee-signs and a bunch of other stuff.

Thanks to Keith Johnson, Woody Blackwell and others for their considerable scoring help, Getting the prizes ready and helping with the ceremony.

Thanks to Vicki Jacob for help during the rounds, Greg Pothier for cleaning the tee-pads at Alex, Steve Adams and Ed Jacob for water cooler loans and other help. ((All GDGO members, as is Mike Curtis).

Amongst my mistakes was misplacing a voucher for last cash in the Recreational division. Roy Clackum Jr. tied for 16th. He could have played in the under 16 division, but he challenged the rec guys at his very first tournament. Because of my oversight, he missed a round of applause. Can we give him one here?

the round ratings for lenora are still not fixed. int women have no round ratings from lenora, rec women have no round ratings at all and even the rec men have none from lenora. also why is a 62 for a woman rated 799 but for another 62 in the int mens gets a 844 for the same course and same tees. how does that work? it's always been the same in the other tourneys i've been in. just asking?

1) Lenora won't get ratings until the update because there were not enough propigators at the course for the course you played.

2) Unfortunately we kind of ended up screwing you because you were pooled with the pros & adv and not the int and rec so your ratings were based on what they did, that's why there was that much of a difference.

Also don't forget the course split and opposite rounds depending on group.

Your Alex ratings were actually better being split now that I look at it, a 74 in the first round at Alex was a 710 for the INT/REC M pool and a 716 for your group.

I echo the accolades to Gerrit and Bill, GDG0, etc. The weather was made to order. I reconnected with an old friend and made some new ones and played some disc golf all at the same time.
It was great to see kids, women, and intermediate levels out there. These will be the future "added cash" folks and maybe the next future pros.

Just sent off the final TD report to the PDGA. They should be happy since there were 49 non-members playing.

Some hilights:
Pro Payout included $400 added cash including $300 from sponsors and another 100 quid from yours truly.
The rest of the sponsorship money went toward the park fees and water, etc.
Pro event value after the PDGA fees was 193%
Ams did a bit better with 194% value compared to entry fees.

I came out just a bit in the red, but i have some merchandise left over to help even that out.

Not sure where to go next year, assuming I'm up to the task of running it again. Maybe B-tier?

Biggest things I saw:

1) <10 juniors need mega short courses made
2) payout at both parks to avoid long wait times
3) more cowbell
4) You need more help, I couldn't help you check out people because I was clueless on the prices
