I wasnt trying to get trees that blocked the shots.I simply wanted to clear out clutter,I understand the living tree aspect,they need to be thinned in areas.A trimming in the fall/winter is a good thing not to better play but to better scenery. If we have to dig them out and transport them to an area of the course that could use a few obstacles know what I mean.

Yes after much much debate about the validity of hole four a minor adjustment had to be made. It was a tough hole, but it lacked true diversity on shot making levels. There are now three routes that players can choose from. here they are from left to right:

1. The wide route: This is also known as the near original route of this hole. It is possible to still reach the basket at this route but while it allows the disc more flexiblity to set up off the tee, the fairway becomes more cluttered with trees as a disc nears the basket.

2. The insiders route: This is a new route. This shot is not the easiest to complete but if executed correctly players can expect an easier par if not a chance at a birdie. It requires a tight anhyzer threaded in between two sets of trees to be completed approx. 80 ft. off the tee.

3. The narrow route: This route is your best choice if you want to birdie the hole. Of all the shots in disc golf this is one of my favorites ( a classic risk/reward shot). Approx. 40 ft off the tee there are two groups of trees that provide a narrow lane to throw a disc through ( approx. 8-10 ft wide). Once you are through the hole is relatively open towards the basket. the kicker is if your disc does hit a tree early the probability of making par goes way down.


And while I agree the hole is easier than its original, it is by no means an easy birdie or a give-me-par. It just needed more variety to an outcome. And the hole can become tougher again.. all it requires is another pin placement further back.

Im so excited about this upcoming weekend, course looks great, layout is a beautiful one, and of coarse... the island is amazing.

Dan, Wade, and I have decided to make 11 a permanent island using the mulch in the spring. I am going to try and talk my uncle into allowing me to use his ditchwitch, but if I cant we could use some help digging. The plan is to dig a ditch, possible a little more forgiving in the front but similar to the island now and fill it up with the mulch located on 18. It would make a gold color ring around the hole and the lawn mowers could run over the much no problem. Plus, if you didnt want to play it, you wouldnt have to.

Dusty Jones has done a lot of the designs around disc golf since Jim Warner past away. So his street cred is good and I believe he's a professional graphics designer to boot. Another worthy players with credentials and skills is Jordy Boyd (?). He does most the disc golf t-shirts you see around Atlanta including my current favorite, the Jim Warner Totem T-shirt!

Holes 1 and 2 are set-up that way to get peoples hopes up then they hit 3 and 5 and for those who dont play the course regularly things go down hill .4 and 14 should be given alt pin locals for now .Then maybe movin back 16 there is plenty of room there .There are many things we can do here being blessed with so many acres.If we cant find any railroad ties we can use some of those rocks near the creek for now

About hole No.18:
Moving the basket back didn't make the hole harder. (atleast for me).... it still plays the same. It's a bit easier for me now since I have an extra shot to make the basket.

If you moved the basket into the woods on hole No. 10, it would create a harder hole. I think the hole is hard enough as it is.... it is a tough par 3 and a very admirable birdie (if you can get one). I have no memory of getting a birdie on that hole, but then again, I have no memory about a lot of things!

Hole No. 2 is a easy hole....but there has been just as many 3's as 2's when I've played. There's not much you can do with a 200ft hole. Moving the pad back a bit would help.... just not sure about all the way on the hill like mentioned before.

Hole no. 4: I don't see how you could move the basket any further back without it being next to the walking trail and interfering with walkers..... sure you could move it further to the right.... but then what was the tree removal for?

Many of my playing partners and I think,18 is a long boring finishing hole as a par 4

10 would either be shorter and reachable w/ an anhyzer
it's 443 ft now from the golds...kinda hard to birdie
if, it was shortened to say 350 to 400 ft. it would play nice w/ the added cart path OB
and still allow for a birdie(or a 5)
or lengthen it to 601 ft and make it a par 4 w/ a double mando off the tee and cart path ob

We would like to expand our course. This is the plan:

Move hole 14 back into the old growth forrest across the dirt road to make another par 4. Thanks JPZ for the idea, and BTW we need your help.

Move hole 15 into the open field left of the basket and behind 16's teepad (Old #14's fairway) Not sure of the measurments yet, but another par 4 hole that requires placement off the tee, and affords yet another birdie possibility on a par 4.

Move hole 16 drastically to the right in the old growth forrest behind 17's teepad. This hole would require the most work but would be a most excellent par 4 anhyzer hole with possible multiple routes to reach the pin. This hole would take the longest to accomplish

To re-cap: Make holes 14-16 par fours. All will be challanging but will still offer players the possibilities of making up strokes after playing 13. Two of these holes could become playable soon, but all of the holes will require safety measures to be put into place before they become hard core realities. Wade and I also need to rely on some of the local golfers (ahem*JPZ) to help us with clearing and a chainsaw would be most excellent (I'm thanking you ahead of time Josh).

we can get a stump grinder that does 6 in. stumps rented for $70 for 4 hours or $100 a day. I can donate some funds and would love to do this but ...$ would be appreciated

I installed flags on top of the baskets this week. It is now much easier to see pins in far away places or through the trees.

What is new about hole 5? It was the best wooded hole you had on the course, minus the scattered guardian trees blocking the basket. I'm just confused as how that hole would get a gold pad when all the other wooded holes could have used a new tee to make them more legit. I haven't see the changes so I'm just speculating here. Hopefully it's not a par 4 bc there are plenty of distance to deal with on the other holes.

It's not a par 4. That would be barney style.
We made another tee since the tree was cut down in the middle of the old fairway. The hole is a lot better in terms of shot accuracy, beauty, and challenge. It's slightly uphill, following a ravine, with 2 trees that outline the fairway gap. The gap is about 20ft wide & 55ft off the tee pad. Make the gap, your golden, miss it and you'll have some chicken on the plate to deal with. Total distance added is not too much, maybe 40ft but the elevation change makes it seem further.

As for the other holes, I think a few trees could come out as well. Mainly the really small ones that are about 2 inches thick. They are shule and really don't have much of a chance to grow. Some of the lanes to shoot for don't line up with the baskets, so you kinda have to hit them and place for a putt.

Well for pouring my first teepad I'd rate my performace at around a solid "B". No groovy lines but the pad seems rough enough so that there won't be any slips or falls. Definetly an improvement from dirt.

Both tees on 5 make for a sweet wooded hole, but have the same problem.There are too many small, invalid trees turning a good shot into a good shot that needs to get lucky at the end.

I really like both tees, and wish that they were both holes on the course. But what is the point of leaving all those tiny trees around the green? Both holes provide an adequate challenge in hitting a gap AND maintaining a line. Those trees compromise the integrity of the hole!!!

Daniel, nice job on your first concrete tee. It made for a smooth take off leading to my birdie!

Josh is going to take care of all the little trees less that 2 inches by taking them out, literally, by hand!!

Backstory: While playing last Sunday Josh smacked one of the little ones on his follow through with his hand. As he stood there in pain the tree he smacked did a slow motion TIMMMBERRR onto his head. If it wasn't for the fact that he drew blood and was in obvious pain I would've had a good laugh because he said he wanted to take out all the 2inch diameter trees before we drove.

Planning on being out at the course most of the day on Thursday and most of the day on Friday finalizing the prep for the course. We will be removing some of the higher reaching limbs on holes 2-6. Some of the lower limbs on the approach to hole 7's pin and a schule/bamboo/briar removal on hole 8.

If you have nothing better to do come on out. Shanes will be on me for the first four people!

With 12 there are really only 4 alternatives:

1.) Move it back across the walking path and set it up as a par 4. I really don't mind doing this (if it the popular consensus) but I must point out that it is probably best to avoid having to cross the walking path (especially on hole 12), considering that people who are walking on the walking path will be in the way for a considerable time. Add in the fact that the pin would be surrounded by complete shule being off target does not sound like much fun.

2.) Shorten the hole. Hole 12 rarely gets dueced, but if there was one more possibility of an attainable birdie on the back I could see the benefit, but then again it's just a shorter hole that can be aced run. (yawn)

3.) Plant trees and such. It would take a long time for them to be of any challange, but this IMO would offer the only real change that could be of benefit for this hole can experience. Anyone know of a nursery looking to get rid of some of their bigger trees at say no cost?

4.) Leave it as is. Granted it is pretty much a throw it as far as you can so that you have a shorter upshot kind of hole, but then again I know I've bogeyed this hole in competition...and I know others have as well. It is definetly not the easiest of wide open par 3's that I have experienced and for that I have to give the current hole a nod. For me it requires at least two of the following things done correctly to achieve par: a decent drive, a great upshot, or a great putt. Without two of these three things this hole will bite you.



Hole 18:

Toughest par 3 on the course (perhaps next to 10). Par it and you leave happy. A bogey is easily had. Really not a lot that we can do here. Sorry. I readily admit that it is not my favorite hole on the course but beyond placing it as a par 4 there is not much that I can think of to make it more interesting. In this case the course gave us what it had left, and what could get you back to the parking lot. Any suggestions that wouldn't involve drastically changing the design (like 86ing a teepad) would be greatly appreciated...perhaps several large boulders with a basket anchored to the top of one? BTW boulders are not commonly found in Henry Co. and would need to be shipped to the course. Anyone have several tons of boulders and a dumptruck we could borrow? J/K

I could reason with your ideas on 12 but I don't have the materials needed to build an elevated basket (and at last check neither did the county)...and I am done spending any dough on the course this year... I personally like the idea of an elevated basket but I also thought it might look better on 18. Of course some of us (who have recently chimed in on this subject) voiced the opinion that an elevated man made basket seems kind of hokie and should not be on this course. I personally like the idea b/c I know that there isn't an elevated basket anywhere near Atlanta. But I also could see how some people might perceive it as more of a distraction than a positive addition (like sunken baskets...allthough I like those too but only in very small doses). So to recap I like your idea on 12 but it's really a question of needing the materials at little to no cost (railroad ties, bricks, etc.). I have even posted on Craig's list before asking for free rocks and railroad ties. I got the rocks but no reponse to the railroad ties. I also have gained plenty of free cinderblocks that I could use however I will not use them unless I had decorative bricks that could go over the outside of them. <-- I don't want to see ugly cinderblocks exposed...and probably the park's dept. doesn't either.

Hole 18 cannot be moved toward the woods. The drive would be even more of an interference with hole 7's teepad, the sun shelter and the green on hole 1. I like to see that you gave it some thought though...perhaps a sunken basket on hole 18? J/K...seriously

The course in savannah not sure what the name of the park is. I know the savannah open is played there, but the fifth hole or so has the best elevated basket i've ever seen. built similar to the way you were explaing with railroad ties. you should try to get a picture of it if your going to consider this because this is a good one to go off of.

Id like to see a hanging basket somewhere on the course. Now that would be sweet. You could do that for the new pin placement on 14. If any basket gets elevated it should be hole 11 like originally planned.

Hole 11 is an island green...enough of a novelty to not need another. I kind of like the idea of having it on 12 myself. I like the idea of it being tiered in the front but being a straight drop in the back. Makes it kind of groovy and different. Maybe 4ft. high with three tiers.

Keep the hanging basket on your own course...BTW are you the person who has like 10 M-14's in their front and back yard?

Don't you remember having to drag 14's basket 80 ft. from deep inside the woods after the Teenage Mutant Vandal Scumbags dug it up and dragged it off to their secret hiding place? Yeah it would be like that except we wouldn't get the basket back. If an item is not nailed, concreted, chained, or padlocked down it's going to come up missing...

Oh yeah another reason I don't like hanging baskets. If the wind is blowing real hard it should only affect my disc and not the target I'm throwing it at.

As for 14, that is a project Josh and I ...and whoever else will help... are going to try and tackle this winter.
After the 1st cypress on the left side by the creek, all trees under 1ft diameter will be cut, up to the creek bed,excluding all cypress/firs
hopefully 1/2 the trees in the middle will be thinned , putting the new collar somewhere near/in front of that low limbed tree left of where the basket is now.
This will not change the par!
But, will bring the creek OB into play
and
allow for the trees on the right/current hyzer line "RHBH", to grow up and not have to be cut wierd to allow a shot thru.
Cause it is getting kinda tight over there.

Getting them to mow in all the areas now is an acomplishment.

There is a possible straight ahead pin placement that could be used but beyond that any other position would interfere with 15's teepad or need a new mowing pattern.

The alternate pin near the creek is a go, dependent on a new pin placement being had. I know that myself and Wade are on a budget and that fund will not be coming out of our pockets. We would provide the concrete however....

We've been, and will continue to be, removing some of the dead trees that line the fairways. Expect some of the holes (14-17) to have some thinning of the pine trees as they are once again are crowding the fairways. Also some of the bradford pears will be experiencing some pruning as preventive maintenece to help avoid damageful splits.

I'd also like to rake/blow the leaves off the fairways on holes 2-6 so that it gets that groovy woods look.<--That and I'm tired of my discs going underneath leaves.

If anyone knows where I can get cheap (but durable outdoor) fabic to update the flags it would be very much appreciative.

I had my chainsaw serviced, so we're good to go.
What do you plan to do with the leaves if you rake them? That is the main reason they haven't been raked.

The leaves have been raked before (last year) and they were raked as far as to side as I cared to go. Bonus: there is only one years of leaves on the ground currently and once its dryer out they should be easier to move.

New memorial bench installed on hole #3. The blank 4X6 concrete slab is now being used for its intended purpose!

New "short" pin placement on #12. I think it is 340ft or so. Basket is partially obscured by the hill but an ace would still be visible. Requires a good drive to be close. It makes the 10-13 stretch not so brutal.

A temporary placement on #10 has also been found. It has a pvc pipe and is approx. 40 ft. behind the sewer cap. The distance from gold tee is 280ft. The shot is interesting as it's between a driver and a mid range. Side armers should like it quite well. While a position closer to the walking path is possible safety becaomes an issue for non disc golfers.

Since we're posting opinions...

I hate the new 12 placement. Just a basket in a field IMO if the point was to make use of the field and still be able to play from your precious black tee should just make 13 the new 12 by playing it from the 12's tee and put a new hole in somewhere else. (obviously you may need to move 13's basket up, maybe closer to the gap leading to 14's tee area. All I can hope is that it's temporary.

I think I was the minority that wanted to push 12 to a par 4 and play 13 as a 4 from the concrete. I suggest we add another basket!!! So you can play the two par 4 layout or you can play short 12 and long 13 for 3/5. Both equal 8.

I will say that I really enjoy 10s new placement. Def makes the turn less daunting and provides a Birdie chance but you're gonna have to make a good throw for that to happen though.

A blind shot is not really feasible on hole #12...it would be too short of a hole and the flag would still be visible. The current shot is not a gimme birdie, but you will feel like you gave up a stroke to the field if you do not birdie it.

I'm not able to park it with a roc or a thumber. It requires more than a long distance hyzer shot from my bag to park it up. It is deceptive to lay it up.

Done and done. When I started that round the short placement didn't even exist, and I still birdied it.

the only way i see possible to solve this issue is make hole 12 a par 4 and hole 13 a par 3 and the both would be very solid holes. how you do it is you throw from hole 12 teebox to a new pin placement in the middle of hole 13 fairway past the shortest mat teebox on hole 13 by about 100-130 feet. i would say put it in those trees thats wide open but completly surronded. solid. then for hole 13 you move the teebox some where around the end of those trees on the left (where i suggest for hole 12 pin placement) out of the way of site from 12 basket and still reachable. make it 340 ish which that pin could be moved a little and you'd have ob on both sides of the basket( the fence on one and creek on other). just my opinion.

I asked for new pin placements for Christmas and I got them! Four of them to be exact. Expect a short 10, a med. #7, and another placement further right of # 6. That leaves 1 more that is undecided (I will not use any of them for a long #12 so don't ask). I was thinking of either a new placement on 8 (towards the woods near #9 gold), a new pin placement on #1 (middle of fairway, instead of tucked), a short # 4, or the cleared area to the left on #14.

If you have any other ideas or would like to see other pins (such as long #12) I can tell you where you can go buy them!

I will now start composing the letter to the Parks dept.

The plastic prevents the trees from dying because of all of the abuse of discs hits. Go see hole 15 at Redan and Houtchins orchard to see what I mean.

That's why I was gonna pull it off. Its already falling peeling off like a cicada skin. Them trees are looking pretty good they may be ok without the plastic. Your call though.
Also just talked to my store manager about maybe getting the potted plants that they throw away at work charitably donated to the course. He said thats cool only stipulation is that I can not personally be the one that takes them. So anyone with in the vicinity that would wanna pick them up either deliver them to my house which is 5 mins from publix and Ill plant them at Moseley or whoever picks them up can plant them themselves. Something I thought of while scanning out a couple Hydrangeas the other day and throwing them in the trash compactor. Why throw away a living plant? When I can take it to my local disc golf course!
